Is Baptism Essential For Salvation?

I agree to the fact that baptism is necessary, but I do question how much knowledge of Christ is needed for a person to be added to the body.
Also, does it matter who is baptizing me? Does the spiritual status of someone else have any impact on whether my immersion is a true baptism?

Hi Karlus,
A person must hear and trust that Jesus died for the sins of all men and that we can not save ourselves but must obey the will of God. Matthew 28:19,20 "Go ye thefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."
From the above, one must know enough to have faith in Christ to be baptized. How much? It depends on the person.
I does matter who baptize you. Jesus commissioned his disciples to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He never commissioned none believers to baptize in his name.
